The intelligence he gathered helped set up the siege that ended the war at Yorktown. Because he'd served as a spy rather than a soldier, the 1783 emancipation law didn't apply to him. He petitioned the Virginia legislature himself, with Lafayette's backing, and was freed in 1787.
