James Armistead Lafayette Signature Candle

Sale price$24.00

James Armistead Lafayette was enslaved in New Kent County, Virginia, when he asked his owner's permission to serve under the Marquis de Lafayette during the Revolutionary War. Posing as a runaway, he gained the trust of British officers, including General Cornwallis, and passed what he overheard back to the Americans. The intelligence he gathered helped set up the siege that ended the war at Yorktown. Because he'd served as a spy rather than a soldier, the 1783 emancipation law didn't apply to him. He petitioned the Virginia legislature himself, with Lafayette's backing, and was freed in 1787. He took the name Lafayette in gratitude.
